Our Story

On his 21st birthday, James received a homebrewing kit from his craft-beer loving father and older brother, Sean. This sparked a passion that grew as he spent years diving deep into the science of brewing, sampling hundreds of different beers,  and crafting nearly a hundred different unique recipes.

As an experienced R&D scientist, James enjoyed creating new things in the lab but longed for a deeper connection with the product and end consumer. He discovered the greatest joy about brewing is when he shares it with others. So he decided to do whatever it takes to open his own brewery and taproom.

Coming full circle in the journey, he partnered with Sean to bring his dream to reality.

"Up the wooden hill" is an old British expression their grandfather used to say when it was time to go upstairs to bed. This peculiar name for a staircase always stuck with them. Taking inspiration from family tradition and their grandfather's entrepreneurial spirit led to the name Wooden Hill.

The Space

We searched for the perfect space for over a year and found a home for the brewery in Edina, MN, just after the city approved new ordinances allowing breweries and taprooms.

This 9,000 square foot warehouse space will be transformed into a production brewery and taproom. It's located at 7421 Bush Lake Road, on the north side of the I-494 & Bush Lake Road intersection. But we're not open yet! We're shooting for a Fall, 2017 open.

Meet the Founders

SEAN EWEN

As an entrepreneur starting my third business, I love how the brewery combines crafting a product with serving the local community in the same space. With degrees in biology and medicine, I'm fascinated with the science of brewing and look forward to helping people learn more about this process.

James Ewen

Given my background in nanotechnology, I particularly enjoy the science of brewing. The creative process of crafting so many new flavors from just water, hops, malt and yeast is incredible. I love sharing my beer with others, receiving feedback, and educating them about brewing methods.
